Women’s Bangladesh Premier League Announces Three-Team Launch
In an exciting development for women’s cricket in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the launch of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL). This upcoming tournament will mark the first women’s T20 competition in the country, set to kick off shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing men’s competition on February 7.
BCB Director’s Vision for Women’s Cricket
BCB director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim expressed his optimism about the potential impact of the WBPL on the growth and progress of women’s cricket in Bangladesh. “The board has been thinking about the various ways that we can take women’s cricket forward,” Fahim stated. “Whether we can do a T20 competition for women was in our thoughts. We have decided today that we will do the Women’s BPL.”
Unique Format and Player Restrictions
The WBPL will feature a three-team format, with each team competing against the others twice in the league stage, totaling six matches. The top teams will then advance to the final to compete for the championship. To ensure a balance between local talent and international exposure, only one overseas player will be allowed in the playing XI, with each squad comprising a maximum of 15 players.
“We won’t take many overseas players due to the financial constraints,” Fahim explained. “We want to give more opportunities to our domestic cricketers. We want to add competitiveness to the tournament and provide a platform for our local players to showcase their skills.”
Impact and Future Prospects
The introduction of the WBPL signifies a significant milestone for women’s cricket in Bangladesh, offering female cricketers a platform to compete at the T20 level and gain valuable experience. The BCB’s initiative reflects a commitment to nurturing and promoting women’s sports in the country, with a focus on enhancing the overall quality and competitiveness of the game.
As the WBPL prepares to make its debut, cricket enthusiasts and supporters eagerly anticipate the exciting matches and talent on display, showcasing the immense potential and skill of women cricketers in Bangladesh.

As a cricket fan myself, I am thrilled to see the BCB taking proactive steps to elevate women’s cricket in Bangladesh through the launch of the WBPL. Providing opportunities for female cricketers to shine on the T20 stage not only enhances the sport’s popularity but also inspires young girls across the country to follow their dreams and pursue a career in cricket. The introduction of restrictions on overseas players demonstrates a strategic approach to prioritizing local talent development and fostering a competitive environment within the league. I look forward to witnessing the inaugural season of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League and supporting our talented women cricketers as they showcase their skills and passion for the game on a national platform.
