F1 Driver Swearing: Fines and Points Deductions Under New FIA Guidelines

In a groundbreaking move, the FIA has unveiled a set of strict penalty guidelines that could potentially see Formula 1 drivers facing fines and championship points deductions for swearing or other violations of the sporting code. These guidelines, outlined in an updated version of the FIA’s sporting code released on Wednesday, aim to uphold the integrity and sportsmanship of the sport.

What Constitutes Misconduct?

The FIA defines misconduct as any behavior that involves offensive, insulting, coarse, rude, or abusive language, gestures, or signs that could reasonably be perceived as inappropriate or offensive. This includes physical acts such as assaulting, as well as incitement to commit any of the aforementioned actions.

Penalties for Offenses

Under the new guidelines, F1 drivers who commit offenses falling under the category of misconduct will face significant penalties. For a first offense, drivers can expect a base fine of €10,000, which quadruples to €40,000 in the context of Formula 1. Subsequent offenses escalate to a base fine of €20,000 (€80,000 for F1 drivers) and a suspended one-month suspension.

Further Violations and Consequences

In instances where drivers cause moral injury or loss to the FIA, its bodies, members, or executive officers, penalties will include fines, suspension, and deduction of championship points. Any public incitement to violence or hatred will be met with similar harsh penalties.

Compliance and Ceremonial Instructions

Additionally, failure to comply with FIA instructions regarding the appointment and participation of individuals during official ceremonies can result in fines starting at €15,000. Repeat offenses carry heavier fines and even suspension from reserved areas of the event. These penalties are multiplied by four for F1 drivers, emphasizing the strict enforcement of regulations in the sport.

As the FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, underscores the importance of upholding the values and principles of motor sport, it is evident that these new guidelines are aimed at maintaining discipline and sportsmanship among all participants. Drivers are urged to adhere to the regulations set forth by the governing body to avoid facing severe consequences for misconduct or non-compliance.

Remember, in the high-octane world of Formula 1, every action comes with a price – and sometimes, that price is more than just financial.
