Motorsport UK Chairman Threatens Legal Action Against FIA President
Motorsport UK chairman, David Richards, recently expressed his concerns regarding the leadership of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. In a lengthy address to Motorsport UK members, Richards highlighted what he described as an “erosion of accountability” within the FIA under Ben Sulayem’s leadership. Richards, who was notably absent from a World Motor Sport Council meeting due to his refusal to sign a non-disclosure agreement, emphasized the need for transparency and good governance within the organization.
Initially supporting Ben Sulayem’s election campaign, Richards outlined how there had been a failure to fulfill promises of full transparency. He recalled the decision to back Ben Sulayem over the British candidate, Graham Stoker, based on the alignment of their views on transforming the FIA. However, Richards pointed out that Ben Sulayem’s presidency did not deliver on key promises, such as a hands-off approach, appointment of a capable CEO, and full transparency.
Concerns were raised regarding recent departures from the FIA, as well as changes to the organization’s governance structure that weakened the ethics and audit committee’s authority. Richards expressed disappointment in the lack of progress over the past three years, noting media reports of senior members and volunteer officials being dismissed or resigning under unclear circumstances.
The breaking point for Richards came when he was asked to sign a new confidentiality agreement that he deemed as a gagging order. Despite already being bound by confidentiality agreements, Richards found the new terms excessive and restrictive, leading him to speak out against the FIA’s practices. The threat of fines and damages for breaching the agreement further fueled Richards’ concerns about the organization’s behavior towards volunteer representatives.
In response to these issues, Richards announced that Motorsport UK would pursue legal action against the FIA unless the concerns raised were addressed promptly. This development has cast a shadow over Ben Sulayem’s upcoming re-election, with Richards’ letter likely to spark reactions within the motorsport community.
The implications of Richards’ strong stance against the FIA highlight the importance of accountability and transparency in governing bodies of motorsport. As the situation unfolds, the future of the FIA and its leadership under Ben Sulayem remains uncertain.
