After 19 illustrious years in the professional cycling world, Geraint Thomas has decided to hang up his helmet and retire from the sport at the end of the season. The 38-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist, who captured the prestigious Tour de France title in 2018, made the announcement on his podcast, Geraint Thomas Cycling Club.

Reflecting on his decision, Thomas shared, “This year will be my final year racing my bike. It’s weird, it’s always been in the back of my mind, the last four years I thought it’d be my last, but it’s official, this will be my last year. When you say it out loud, it’s like, ‘blimey, in seven to eight months, it’ll be done’. You can’t do it forever; I’m getting a few grey hairs. I don’t want to do one too many. I don’t want to be the guy on the bus who is a bit of a grumpy person.”

As Thomas contemplates his retirement, he remains passionate about the sport that has been a significant part of his life since he was 12. The thrill of riding, racing, training, and getting fitter has been a driving force for him. Despite his unwavering love for the sport, Thomas is mindful of not overstaying his welcome, expressing, “I don’t want to get to the stage where I’m like, ‘I should’ve stopped last year, I don’t want to be here anymore’.”

Family plays a pivotal role in Thomas’ decision-making process, as he considers the precious moments he has shared with his son, Macs, who will turn six this year. Thomas is grateful for the experiences he has been able to create with his family, particularly his son’s presence at races, which he hopes Macs will fondly remember. Reflecting on the significance of his son’s birth coinciding with his Tour de France victory, Thomas marvels at the unexpected turns his career has taken.

With 19 seasons under his belt, Thomas acknowledges the longevity of his career and the importance of embracing new challenges. His willingness to diversify his cycling endeavors, including track cycling, has kept his journey dynamic and engaging. While the prospect of another year of competition, such as the Commonwealth Games, lingers, Thomas recognizes that the timing for his retirement feels right.

With a mix of nostalgia, gratitude, and excitement for the future, Geraint Thomas prepares to bid farewell to the professional cycling circuit. As he embarks on his final season, his legacy as a formidable competitor and a dedicated family man will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of fans and fellow cyclists alike. The road ahead may be uncertain, but Thomas’ indomitable spirit and passion for cycling will forever remain a testament to his remarkable career.
